Manitoba artists have brought home three 2006 Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards (CAMA) from the eighth annual gala celebration in Toronto. The CAMAs, held in conjunction with the Canadian Aboriginal Festival, were held on November 24 at the John Basset Theatre.

Juno-winning rock act Eagle & Hawk, which led this year's nominations with four nods, won Best Group or Duo for Life Is..., which was also up for a 2006 Western Canadian Music Award. Norway House-based sextet Highway 373 took home Best Rock Album for No Limits in a category shared with Eagle & Hawk. Cliff Maytwayashing's Skiffle Fiddle won Best Fiddle Album, beating out fellow Manitoban, teenage fiddler Harv Settee Jr.

"This has been an incredible year for Aboriginal music in Manitoba and Canada as a whole," says Sam Baardman, Executive Director of MARIA. "In 2007 alone, Manitoba artists have brought home 17 awards from the inaugural Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Awards in Winnipeg earlier this month, the Indian Summer Music Awards in Milwaukee, the Native American Music Awards in Florida, the Junos, and now the CAMAs. Congratulations to all the nominees and winners and all the artists who've traveled to showcases across the continent."

“Manitoba’s Aboriginal musicians continue to raise the bar on the national and international scene,” says Carole Vivier, CEO of MANITOBA FILM & SOUND. “What an outstanding achievement for Eagle & Hawk and all Manitoba winners and nominees.”

Of the 19 categories, several were presented in a private pre-telecast affair known as The Overture Awards. The remainder of the awards were presented and aired as a special telecast on CHUM television stations.
