The Manitoba Aboriginal Music Host Committee, organizer of the Manito Ahbee Festival and the Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Awards, is responsible for producing the Star Catcher project. With an untapped wealth of Aboriginal talent throughout the province, the committee has offered to produce Star Catcher contests for 4 other communities before a final showdown at the Red River Ex on National Aboriginal Day this year.

“This is not your typical talent search,” states Lisa Meeches, chair of the Manitoba Aboriginal Music Host Committee. “Star Catcher provides winners with an abundance of opportunities to develop as performers and artists through mentorship and training.”

The June 21st contest will feature the top three contestants from each of the 5 communities with a performance slot on the Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Award show stage as the grand prize. Each of the 15 finalists will also receive an opportunity to record one of their songs with an established producer at a Manitoba Film & Sound accredited studio in Winnipeg to help them further develop their careers and knowledge of the music industry.

The contests are open to Aboriginal amateur singers of any age and applicants are required to complete a registration form, pay a $50 registration fee and submit a demo recording along with a biography and photograph.

Each talent contest will be judged by a panel of Aboriginal people who work in the music industry and each contestant will have the option of singing with a professional back-up band.
