Eight Manitoba artists and industry professionals have netted nine nominations at the 2009 Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards (CAMA). CAMA, now celebrating its eleventh year, is held in conjunction with the Canadian Aboriginal Festival, which runs November 27-29, 2009 in Hamilton, Ontario. The awards will be handed out at a gala event on November 27 at the Hamilton Place Theatre.

Rapper and CBC Radio host Wab Kinew leads with two nominations, including Best Rap or Hip-Hop Album for Live by the Drum and Best Rap or Hip-Hop Music Video for “Last Word.” Kinew is up for the same categories at this year’s Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Awards, which are open to public voting.

Bluesman Billy Joe Green is up for Best Blues Album for his Juno and APCMA-nominated release, First Law of the Land. Fellow APCMA nominees Don Amero and Ashock have nods for Best Male Artist and Best Traditional Flute Album, respectively. Gerry McIvor is up for Best Fiddle Album.

Two Winnipeg-based television productions, both of which aired on APTN, have received nods for Best Television Program or Special Promotion Aboriginal Music: Lisa Meeches’ production of the Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Awards, and Aboriginal Day Live 2009, produced by Sky Bridges, Naomi Clark, Linda Nelson, and Norm Lussier. Local rock outfit Lost Priority is up for Best Album Cover Design for its release, All That We Are, designed by Loren Stevenson with artist and photography by Richard Knott.

Two Manitoba-based labels have also received CAMA nominations. Sunshine Records released nominated albums by McIvor as well as Ontario-based acts Lawrence Martin, who is up for two CAMAs, and Eric Voice. Arbor Records, which has offices in Manitoba and Ontario, released albums by Ashock and Tumivut, who is up for three CAMAs.
