Don Amero has added to his already impressive list of accolades this year. The Winnipeg-based singer/songwriter was named Best Male Artist at the 2009 Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards (CAMA). The awards were handed out at a gala event on November 27 at the Hamilton Place Theatre in Hamilton.

This is the second award for Amero this month. Amero, who released his sophomore effort Deepening in early 2009, won Aboriginal Songwriter of the Year at the 2009 Canadian Folk Music Awards in Ottawa on November 21. He was also nominated Entertainer of the Year, Best Folk/Acoustic CD, and Aboriginal Radio Single of the Year at this year’s Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Awards in Winnipeg.

Amero was in Hamilton for the CAMA celebrations, performing during the gala as well as the Manitoba Aboriginal Artists Showcase at The Studio at Hamilton Place immediately after the show. The showcase was presented by Manitoba Music’s Aboriginal Music Program and featured performances by other CAMA nominees from Manitoba, including Gerry McIvor, Wab Kinew, and Lost Priority. Ontario’s popular act Digging Roots and B.C.’s Inez were also on the bill for the event.

Eight Manitoba artists and industry professionals landed nine nominations at the 11th annual celebration, which was held in conjunction with the Canadian Aboriginal Festival, November 27-29, 2009.
