Five Awards for Manitobans at the First Night of the Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Awards

Winnipeg's Most, Eagle & Hawk, JJ Lavallee, and NCI FM picked up five awards at the first round of the Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Awards on November 4. Hardware was handed out at the invite-only event, dubbed RBC Ohshkii Awards Night, at Fort Garry Place's Grand Ballroom, by hosts Ray St. Germain and Lisa Meeches. 

Hip hop act Winnipeg's Most -- aka Jon-C, Brooklyn, and Charlie Fettah -- landed awards for Best Duo or Group and Best Rap/Hip Hop CD for its debut self-titled release on local label, Heatbag Records. 

JJ Lavallee and his latest release, A Fiddle Bit of This & A Fiddle Bit of That, tied with Sudbury's Jacinthe Trudeau for Best Fiddle CD. 

Rock outfit Eagle & Hawk picked up another honour for its new album, The Great Unknown, which was named Best Rock CD. The Great Unknown has racked up 15 award nods this year, including the Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards, Western Canadian Music Awards, Native American Music Awards, and Canadian Folk Music Awards, and a win in the Contemporary Modern Instrumental category at the Indian Summer Music Awards

NCI FM's National Aboriginal Music Countdown, hosted by Melissa Spence, was named Best Aboriginal Music Radio Station/Program.  

Manitoba acts and locally produced programs netted 26 nominations for the publicly-voted Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Awards this year. The remaining winners will be announced at the gala event at the MTS Centre on November 5.
