National Aboriginal Day celebrations in Manitoba - 2011

Posted on

Ray St. Germain, Don Amero, Elisapie Isaac, the Joe Maxim Band, Derek Miller, Andrea Menard, Dey & Nite, Burnt-Project 1, Shane Yellowbird, George Leach, A Tribe Called Red, Holly Vee, and Mista Vibes are some of the Aboriginal artists performing during the National Aboriginal Day celebrations in Manitoba this year. As in previous years, the celebrations start earlier in the week and take place in a number of venues throughout Winnipeg.

Aboriginal Music Week has concerts set for June 17 and 18 at the Pyramid Cabaret in Winnipeg. This “Warm-Up Weekend” features bluesman George Leach and JUNO Award winners Burnt-Project 1 on the first night, followed by the Electric Pow Wow with A Tribe Called Red on Saturday night.

The Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (APTN) has full day of festivities planned for June 18. Their Aboriginal Day Live event will feature an artisans market, skate board demos, and their annual summer solstice concert at the Scotiabank Stage in downtown Winnipeg.

The Manito Ahbee Festival is hosting a one-day pow wow at the Red River Exhibition Park on June 21. This will be followed by a concert featuring Shane Yellowbird and Don Amero staring at 8pm.

McPhillips Station Casino is bringing the Aboriginal Express with host Ray St. Germain back to the Mainstage on June 21. Darren Lavallee will also entertain guests at the Grand Lobby from 12pm-4pm on National Aboriginal Day.

Check the event listings below and please send details for any other concerts or pow wows to Alan Greyeyes (alan@manitobamusic.com).
