AMP Camp 2012 - the week in review

The sixth installment of the Aboriginal Music Performers Camp (AMP Camp) is in the books. The week included discussions about festivals, music placements, marketing, touring, conferencing, and radio along with a number of workshops to help the participants improve their songwriting, musicianship, and performances skills. The participants made the trip to the Falcon Trails Resort from Newfoundland, Quebec, Ontario, northern Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, and British Columbia and the instructors brought close to 300 years of music industry experience to the table.

Native America North: Five Local Aboriginal Acts Perform for Influential Industry Presenters at the Pyramid, March 24

Manitoba Music's Aboriginal Music Program will be taking over the Pyramid Cabaret on March 24 for a showcase of emerging Aboriginal artists, dubbed the Native America North Showcase. The event -- which features sets by country singer/songwriter Jerry Sereda and Desiree Dorion, new country duo D’Aoust Brothers, singer/songwriters and rapper Lorenzo, and teenage pop singer Savannah Rae Boyko -- offers the performers an opportunity to connect with the industry tastemakers and continue to build on their success. CBC Music, the event's media sponsor, will be on hand to host the event.

The five acts will perform for the influential panelists in town for the Aboriginal Music Live presenters panel on March 22 at Manitoba Music. Visiting speakers include Patti Shaughnessy of Ode'min Giizis Festival, Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Association’s Adele Boychuk, Sky Bridges of APTN’s Aboriginal Day Live, and Shawn Termin of the National Museum of the American Indian in New York.

Aboriginal Musicians from Across Canada Converge on Manitoba for AMP Camp Residency Project

Nineteen Aboriginal musicians from across Canada will converge on Falcon Trails Resort for this year's installment of the Aboriginal Music Program (AMP) Camp, which runs March 4-9, 2012. Hosted by Manitoba Music and the Canada Council for the Arts, the week-long residency gives emerging and mid-career Aboriginal recording artists an opportunity to develop their business skills and artistic abilities. 2012 will mark the sixth year for AMP Camp. Past participants, including JUNO Award nominee Tracy Bone, Canadian Folk Music Award winner Don Amero, and CBC’s The 8th Fire composer Cris Derksen, have gone on to release acclaimed albums, receive multiple music awards and nominations, and make music their full-time job.

Now Taking Submissions for an Aboriginal music presenter’s showcase on March 24

SUBMISSION DEADLINE: 4pm CST Wednesday, February 15, 2012

Manitoba Music’s Aboriginal Music Program is producing a showcase for Aboriginal music presenters and promoters in Winnipeg on March 24, 2012. The showcase will be held at the Pyramid Cabaret and the presenters include Patti Shaughnessy (Ode'min Giizis Festival), Adele Boychuk (Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Association), Sky Bridges (APTN’s Aboriginal Day Live), Dalton Higgins (Harbourfront Centre), and Shawn Termin (National Museum of the American Indian - NYC).

Aboriginal artists and bands that live in Manitoba and perform original country, rock, blues, hip hop, and folk are encouraged to apply for this opportunity.

Manitoba Music’s Aboriginal Music Program is pleased to announce the list of invited artists for the 2012 edition of the Aboriginal Music Performers Camp (AMP Camp). A total of 42 strong applications were received, making the adjudication process both interesting and difficult.

Darren Lavallee - AMP Mentor in Residence for October

Darren Lavallee is the Aboriginal Music Program's (AMP) Mentor in Residence for the month of October. Starting on Monday, October 3, he will be available for one-on-one career consultations, phone and email questions, fiddle lessons, and songwriting feedback at the Manitoba Music Resource Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
